November 30, 2009 The SAC Girls Basketball season kicks off this evening with a non conference game in Decatur as the Lady Raiders hosts Climax-Scotts.
The season is looking like it's going to be filled with great games and action, as the list of returning players that earned ALL-SAC honors is a long one. Three girls return that earned First Team honors.
Watervliet's Andrea Hiler, Bangor's Shanell Smith and Gobles Taylor Killeen will provide their teams with leadership as all three teams will contend for the SAC Championship.
Returning Second Team players include Saugatuck's Ana Capotosto, Marcellus' Sarah Mencl and Melina DeKilder of Gobles.
Returning players in the North that received Honorable Mention in the SAC last season are Jaleesa Campbell and Calmika Covington of Bangor; Judy Gilbert-Gobles, Shannon Turner-Fennville, and Chelsea Gile-Bloomingdale.
In the South, Alex Spaulding-Watervliet; Cassandra Willis and Jenna Maury of Lawton; Rachel Carpp of Lawrence and Danielle Webster of Marcellus all return to help push their teams to the SAC Championship.
If you are looking for what team to pick for the Championship, history tells us several teams to look for. Bangor is loaded with returning players as is Gobles. Watervliet has to replace several key players but any coach would love to have Hiler and Spaulding on it's roster. Lawton has a roster of Sophomores and Juniors with varsity experience and should be in the mix as well. Saugatuck graduated several starters but Capotosto will provide a lot of scoring.
Other teams to keep an eye on are in the south, Lawrence has the talent to contend and in Marcellus, the Lady Wildcats are hungry after a couple disappointing seasons. So take your pick, Bangor vs. Watervliet or is it going to be Gobles vs. Lawton. So whoever you are cheering for, it will be an exciting season in the SAC!!!
