Boy’s Basketball Teams Reaches Regionals
By: Kyle Beery

The Indians reached the regional round in the state tournament this season.  They fell
short of getting to the regional final game by 3 points to the defending state champion Bath
Bees by a score of 59-56.  The team wrapped up their season on March 3rd at Pewamo
Westphalia High School against the bees and finished with a record of 17-6 for the second
year in a row.

The boys got off to a slow start with a 1-3 record including a heartbreaker in Watervliet.
After their shaky start, the Indians won 14 of 16 games, with both of those losses in overtime
to their SAC North Division foe Bangor Vikings.

“We had a very successful season,” said starting sophomore guard Joey Broderick. “The group of guys was wonderful. We had
tremendous team chemistry.”

The boys knocked off the number 4 state ranked Lawrence Tigers with a buzzer beating lay up by sophomore forward Tyler Brunsting.
The upset was the Indian’s highlight of he regular season.

The team defeated Gobles for the third time of the season in the first round of the district tournament at Gobles High School by a score
of 53-50.  They got their revenge on Bangor in the second round and beat them 51-49.

“Amazing,” commented Broderick about the 3 games with the Vikings this year. “They were the best three games of my life.  We won
when it was important.”

Nick Dunn said, “The games with Bangor were extremely intense.”  Dunn had 18 points against Bangor in the districts.

Broderick also said, “It was fun, no matter if we lost in overtime or beat them in districts.”

Saugatuck finished a three game sweep of the Bloomingdale Cardinals in the district championship game with a 67-39 rout.  The win
gave the school their 4th district title in 6 years.

Saugatuck head coach Russ Doane said, “The hardware means a lot.” He also said it feels good to carry on the tradition. The Indians
had confidence going into regionals. Doane said, “They’re beatable,” referring to the defending state champion Bath Bees.

On March 3rd the Indians traveled across the state to Pewamo Westphalia High School for the regional game against the Bees.
Saugatuck played with the champs for the entire game, and even had a nine point lead late in the third quarter. They let it slip away, and
dropped the game by 3 points.

“I love the Blue Crew,” Doane said. The Blue Crew is Saugatuck’s new student section and the coach really appreciated the support from
the crowd. Parents and students followed the team all year.

“I remember one year in our district final game at Hudsonville Freedom Baptist, I counted about 30 people from Saugatuck in the stands
and it was a bit discouraging.” After that happened at districts, Doane and his team came up with a new goal to fill the stands each game.
“We can do that by working hard during the off-season.”

He said he is very lucky for parent support.  His players have a desire to win and also love the Blue Crew support. Dunn thinks the team
will be solid next year, even without the graduating seniors.

The Indian basketball team had an outstanding season and the team and entire fan base was disappointed that they had to finish the
season the way they did.
